"The historic name of ancient Assam is Pragjyotishpur. The place where the sun rises is adored as Pragjyotishpur; the place where astrology was studied first is Pragjyotishpur; the heartland of Bharatiya culture and civilisation is Pragjyotishpur. Pragjyotishpur University is named after this historicity. The University stepped up with the formation of a non-governmental organisation known as the Shankardev Education and Research Foundation (SERF), which is the sponsoring body of the University. Pragjyotishpur University has now established itself as one of the Higher Education Institutions in Northeast in particular and in Bharat in general"
